Vallermosa
TOWN
"Valle bella e fertile", A beautiful and fertile valley—the name says it all, worn like something that fits perfectly.
Vallermosa stretches across the valley floor at the foot of the Linas massif, in a position that has long made it a natural crossroads between the Campidano plain and the Sulcis-Iglesiente region. It is a place of passage and pause, where plains meet mountains and the landscape shifts within just a few kilometres.
The earliest traces of human presence date back to prehistoric times, with settlements that left evidence in caves and natural shelters in the surrounding hills. During the Nuragic age, a civilisation deeply rooted in the land flourished here, as shown by the archaeological remains still visible in the countryside.
With the arrival of the Phoenicians and later the Romans, the area became strategic for connections between the southern coast and the rich mining districts of Iglesiente. In the Middle Ages, Vallermosa was part of the Judicate of Cagliari, within the curatoria of Cixerri, and experienced successive Pisan, Aragonese, and Spanish rule.
The feudal period left a lasting mark on the community, with the territory passing through various lordships until the abolition of feudalism in the 19th century.
The 20th century brought both change and challenge: two world wars, emigration, but also the resilience of those who chose to stay and continue cultivating this generous land.
Today, Vallermosa preserves its dual identity: agricultural in the valley, mountainous toward the uplands, offering different experiences within a short distance.
L’ambiente naturale
Vallermosa exists in balance between two landscapes: the gently open, cultivated plain and the rising mountain slopes of the Linas. Water flows quietly but steadily, feeding a network of small streams and channels.
As elevation increases, the landscape transforms. Cultivated fields give way to Mediterranean vegetation: lentisk, myrtle, strawberry tree, and rockrose. The air becomes cooler, the scents more intense. Higher still, woodlands take over: ancient holm oaks, cork oaks with rugged bark, and in some reforested areas, pines and eucalyptus growing alongside native species.
The Linas massif supports remarkable biodiversity: wild boar, foxes, and weasels inhabit the forests, while in the sky you may spot buzzards, kestrels, and, with some luck, golden eagles. The seasons here have a distinct character: summers are bright but rarely oppressive thanks to the elevation, autumn colours the undergrowth in ochre and red, and spring brings an abundance of wild blooms.
A journey through the landscape
From Vallermosa begins a journey through a territory that rewards exploration. The historic centre still reflects its agro-pastoral heritage: stone houses, inner courtyards, and small churches that speak of a close-knit community.
Just outside the village lies the archaeological area of Matzanni, one of the most important sites of Nuragic Sardinia. Here, among ancient stones and open views over the valley, time feels deep and layered. The site is set within a natural environment that is slowly reclaiming its space, creating a balanced dialogue between history and landscape.
Continuing toward the Linas, the road climbs through gentle bends and ever-changing views. You pass through shaded forests, alongside abandoned rural shelters, and encounter fountains and springs where you can stop and rest. Trails branch out in many directions: some lead to higher peaks, others disappear into the Mediterranean scrub, ideal for those seeking quiet and solitude.
In spring and autumn, these routes become especially rewarding for slow walking, observing, and listening.
You return to the village with your eyes filled with green and your breath still wide, carrying with you the distinct feeling of having crossed multiple landscapes in a single journey.
